4 Tips To Help Avoid Burnout

Burnout can cause many issues, to you, your family and your business. What can you do to avoid it?

The issues burnout can cause, range from withdrawing emotionally from work, losing motivation, becoming less productive to various emotional and physical health problems – as some studies suggest. So what causes burnout? Work overload is often a factor. This could be either from the basic need to have the work to provide for you and family or even wanting to do all you can to grow your business and so working many hours!

To add to this, technology now keeps us in constant contact with our jobs, blurring the lines between work and private life.

So what are the steps to avoiding burnout? Consider 4:

EVALUATE YOUR PRIORITIES.

When asked, what is most important to you? Many, if not all, of us would say family, friends, good health. But usually on the road to burnout, these are the things that are impacted first and are usually the first to suffer if we are burned out. By keeping our priorities clear in mind, we are less likely to cause them to suffer and more likely to then spend more time with our friends and family. We also prepare ourselves to make difficult decisions to cut down on work and make time for those we care about.

SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE.

If you feel there just aren’t enough hours in the day. You may be right! However, unless you have invented a time machine, there’s not much you can do about it. But there is, it may just be a case of cutting down time spent on work things or social media and spending more time at the dinner table – without your phone – with your family or friends, or just making time to go out and enjoy the fresh air and your surroundings.

LEARN WHEN TO SAY NO TO WORK.

This is always the hard one! Sometimes we may have an employer who asks more of us than our time allows, other times, we are our own worst enemy! Whether we need to sit down with our employer and come to a mutually agreeable solution or even doing the same with ourselves, this is a conversation that is essential to a good work-life balance. This is a great start, but we then need to keep to this agreement. Doing so will mean we can then ask our employer – even ourselves – to do the same!

RENEW YOURSELF.

This is a really important one. Our work may not be the thing that occupies most of our time, it may not be the thing that causes most stress, but regardless of what is, the above points can apply to those and then this last point is the most effective!

Rest and enjoyment! Sufficient rest is worth far more than anything else and can even increase our efficiency. Enjoyment with friends and family – away from work or other stresses – does not have to be expensive. Spending time with these ones even just on a walk is sometimes all we need to recharge our batteries and renew ourselves.

Self-care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. What’s your self-care routine?
